The arteries take the blood from the heart to extremities. The veins help the blood to return to the heart. They are conduits that has valves that work as hatches that allows the blood to get trough as they opened and to prevent the blood to gets back as they get closed. If the valves do not work well, the blood does not flow towards the heart in an efficient way. The veins become tortuous and size increased because they are congested whit blood. These thick(bulky) and tortuous veins are the varicose veins. The varicose veins can be very superficial in the skin and they can be pretty small in red color, blue or purple and they are known commonly as " spider legs ". Those who are deeper are thicker.
